Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 3221, a housing tax relief package.  Part of the relief package includes a one-year, $7,500 tax credit for first-time homebuyers.  The credit would only apply to a purchase of a principal residence, and a first-time homebuyer’s can not exceed $70,000.  The US Senate has its own version of a housing relief bill; however, its version only applies to purchases of foreclosed properties.  NAR has provided a side-by-side comparison of both bills – click here to view that comparison.  Please visit the NAR Web site for more information.

HOUSE FINANCIAL SERVICES APPROVES FORECLOSURE BILL
Last week, the US House of Representatives Financial Services Committee passed the FHA Housing and Homeowner Retention Act.  According to NAR, this act “would encourage servicers to write down the principal of a troubled mortgage by substantial amounts, and the bill would permit FHA to insure the revised mortgage in exchange for the homeowners sharing a portion of furture appreciation with the government”.  The legislation is expected to go to the full House for a vote later this month.  For more information, please visit the NAR Web site for more information.
